About our Practice...
Physical Therapy Specialists was founded in December 1981, in a small office in Clawson with Paul Roubal as the sole therapist. Because of its strong emphasis on high quality, and the good results reported by patients, the practice grew steadily to its present level. Physical Therapy Specialists, P.C. now employs six physical therapists, one occupational therapist and an appropriate number of physical therapy assistants and supportive personnel.

Stemming from a need to better accommodate patients, to have space for new types of exercise equipment, and to provide a step-down/fitness program monitored by professionals, plans were underway in 1985 to relocate. A site was chosen to stay in the same general vicinity, and the building plans were designed specifically to suit the needs of this practice and its patients. In April 1986, the relocation was made to the practice's present site in Troy. Since this time, our practice has continued to grow and strive towards use of state-of-the-art equipment as part of patient treatment and exercise programs. In April 1992, construction plans were underway to expand the facility to allow for additional exercise equipment and our Fitness Center, to a total of 10,000 sq. ft.

As Physical Therapy Specialists, we are dedicated to the highest quality patient care available. The use of the most effective procedures and equipment by specialists, who fortify their background with advanced training and education, leads to excellent and appropriate patient care. We have more orthopedic board certified specialists in our location than any other single location in the Midwest. Our clinic utilizes newly developed procedures for testing and evaluation, as well as for treatment. Each piece of equipment used for your treatment will be explained as to its purpose and effects. In addition, we train both undergraduate and graduate physical therapists from campuses at Oakland University, Wayne State University and University of Michigan Flint.

Your treatment program may include an exercise program to increase strength, decrease muscle spasms, or to improve functional movement. Our facility offers Eagle Cybex progressive resistance equipment that allows for individual fit of equipment for added safety and effectiveness. We tailor each exercise program to the physical needs of you, the patient. We also offer Stairmaster, Biodex, and Nu-Step. Patients with spine related diagnoses will benefit from our back stabilization exercise program. This is designed to specifically train the back muscles to protect the spine during activities of daily living. All exercise programs are progressed to meet each patient's functional needs to enable return to optimal levels of work and leisure activities.

Our practice has a "team approach" philosophy. You will generally be assigned to a specific physical therapist who will coordinate and manage your program. Your "team" may include supportive staff such as Physical Therapist Assistants and Physical Therapy Techs. Also, because our therapists have come from a "patient-sharing" environment, they are quite able to work together during your therapy here should your scheduling or therapy needs indicate. Our physical therapists regularly coordinate your program both verbally and in writing, by daily progress notes and periodic re-evaluations.

A major emphasis of our practice is on home program development and modification. We feel that you, as the patient, play a large role in your rehabilitation, and your consistency in following-through with this program will greatly improve the effectiveness of our treatment and the speed of your recovery. Our goal is not to keep you coming to physical therapy permanently, but to help you reach your maximum potential, and to teach you how to stay at that level on your own.

For the above reasons, it was a natural extension to add our step-down program which began the summer of 1986. This program is designed for patients almost ready to be discharged from physical therapy, and heavily emphasizes exercise with goals to return patients to maximal activity levels. Patients in this program will have the availability of using the full body whirlpool for muscle relaxation after their exercise and cool-down periods, if this is authorized by their physician. Patients are also able to perform hydrotherapy exercise in the whirlpool. Other modality-type treatments are eliminated at this time to go along with the step-down concept. Upon discharge, patients will be prepared to follow through with their individual program either at home or out in the community. Alternatively, they may join our Fitness Center as a member.

Our Fitness Center program is recommended for persons with previous injuries or musculoskeletal conditions who may have difficulty with a regular health club program due to special precautions or modifications needed. It is open to past patients and to the public, after passing medical clearance guidelines of the American College of Sports Medicine. Members will be given a thorough health and lifestyle assessment, as well as a musculoskeletal fitness evaluation. From this extensive evaluation, a full fitness program will be designed by one of our exercise consultants, with instruction and supervision given by our Fitness Staff. Programs are monitored and modified at regular intervals throughout the membership.
